ABOUT

Sammy D. Smith is a painter, sculptor, and curator who was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He left Pittsburgh in 2006 to join the U.S. Marines for two tours of active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, after which he studied architecture at the University of New Mexico and painting at the University of Pittsburgh. He currently resides and works in Pittsburgh.

Smith attempts to create art that is at once deeply personal and universal, unexpected and familiar. Much of Smith's art is heavily informed by his experiences in the military, human psychology (especially Jungian archetypes), and classic cinema and comic books,.

Throughout the last decade, Smith has participated in and helped install numerous group shows around the Pittsburgh area, frequently with the art cohort Public or with downtown Pittsburgh's Wood Street Galleries. In 2021, Smith co-curated (with Keith Tassick and artist Ian Brill) and participated in This Sacred Thing, a group art exhibit at Pittsburgh's SPACE Gallery centered on the notion of reverence in art.
